Inspired by Edward Jenner”

Sunday 4 May 2014: Opening to the public
Friday 16 May 2014: Exhibition Ends
Sunday 18 May 2014: Take Down Exhibition

Edward Jenner is well known as the creator of the first vaccine and indeed the “Father of Immunology”. He trained in medicine in London but returned to Gloucestershire where he carried out much of his life's work. He was also fascinated by geology and natural sciences, and developed his garden specifically to experiment in the area of botany. His house has a fascinating history as well as interesting period features and the vinery includes a fabulous example of vines grown under cover.

Catherine Jones, who has been fascinated by medicine and in particular, pathology since she was a child, (her grandfather was an eminent pathologist who worked on developing penicillin and the first cancer treatments) conceived of the idea of art work inspired by Edward Jenner in 2012. She is delighted to be curating this exhibition which in part is to encourage new artists to enter into the field of visual response.

Artwork for this exhibition must take as its inspiration the museum, the Jenner story, and the themes within the museum's current exhibitions. Final decisions as to the appropriateness of the art work is with the curator of the exhibition and the trustees of the museum.

All expenses for materials, travel etc are to be met by the artist. There is no budget for grant making to artists.

Artists will be required to be available on site, on both installation and taking down days and to liaise with the museum and curator of the exhibition in the 3 weeks preceding the exhibition to arrange installation instructions.

Artists participating will be given free entry to the museum in order to undertake research and work for this exhibition. Access is available, in principle, 9.30am-5pm Monday to Friday until Sunday 6 April, which is when the museum is open to the public for the 2014 season, after which artists may also attend on a Sunday. Please note conditions for visits below.

It is the responsibility of the artist to contact Catherine Jones (thegalleryattheendofthelane@gmail.com or 07868028246 texts please) with proposed times to visit, to give at least 10 days notice to ensure times are acceptable to the Museum who run on a skeleton staff, while the museum is officially closed.

  • The types of artists' materials and any equipment that they want to use,
so that the museum can advise if these are incompatible with the conditions that the museum collection requirements, or are otherwise unsuitable for the museum building.

  • Materials to be used at any visit must be agreed before the visit takes place.
When working at the museum the artist is required:
  • to wear a name lanyard for ID reasons and also to have a briefing on health and safety
